Before I was a travel writer, journalist, tour guide or any other profession, I was a bicycle messenger on the mean streets of New York City in the eighties.
The experience left an indelible mark on my soul, and if you got in my way jaywalking I may have left an indelible mark on you. (Sorry, I was in a rush back then.)
So cycling has and hopefully always will be a big part of my life. Over the last decade I’ve gotten into bicycle journalism and have written many cycling articles for sports magazines, business media and websites.
Bicycle Journalism
Here are just a few of them:
Taiwan: from Bike Kingdom to Cyclist’s Paradise
Topics Magazine
Exploring how Taiwan went from bike exporter to prime destination for bike tours.
48 hours around Formosa
Road Bike Action
The title says it all. The closest I’ve ever come to having a nervous breakdown on assignment.
Bike Friendly Los Angeles
BBC / Lonely Planet Online
A lot of folks don’t think of Los Angeles as a bike friendly town. I went there for two weeks to disprove this.
A guide to Biking in Portland, Oregon
Momentum Magazine
Bicycle Times Magazine
For a few years I contributed a story or two a year to Bicycle Times Magazine, which now seems to be defunct. Some of the work I’ve done for them is still online, but not all of it.
My longest story, Eastern Taiwan by 11 and 9 seems to be offline, but I have a PDF copy of it somewhere. There’s a bit of a teaser for it here. Portions of it are online at the Bicycle Adventures Website.
Rolling Exposure: Portland’s Naked Bike Ride, which was one of the most fun to research and write (not to mention the thrill of seeing my name appear in naked people font) isn’t online at their site, but it is alive and well (naked people font and all) on mine.
Conformity Rides a Blue Bicycle
An op-ed of sorts about the NYC Bike share program.
Highlights from the Taipei Bicycle Show
Strangely still online…
I also did a few more articles for Bicycle Times, a couple about cycling for the EVA in-flight magazine, and several of articles and blog posts for and from my two 2015 bicycle tours around Taiwan with bicycle adventures.
Someday I’ll find them, along with all the bike pumps, tubes & patch kits I left on the Staten Island ferry in eighties.
